As passionate filmmakers, we are thrilled to introduce our upcoming short film, “Wrong End of the Blade,” which is currently in pre-production. This ambitious project delves into the profound and unconventional topic of addiction, bringing a fresh perspective to the screen. We are looking forward to bringing this unique narrative to life, one that promises to leave a lasting impact on audiences.
A Unique Take on Addiction
“Wrong End of the Blade” offers a nuanced exploration of addiction, focusing on an unusual habit rather than a conventional substance. The film tells the story of Gary, a troubled individual grappling with an uncommon addiction to eating grass. This addiction leads to significant psychological and social challenges, shedding light on broader themes of personal struggle, societal judgement, and the complexities of human relationships.
The Heart of the Story
At the core of “Wrong End of the Blade” is Gary’s emotional journey. His addiction to grass is not merely a peculiar habit but a symbol of deeper issues. Gary’s interactions with key characters – Maryanne, Andy, and Barb – form the narrative’s backbone, each contributing to his struggle in unique ways.
Maryanne
Torn between support and frustration, Maryanne represents the loved ones who find themselves in a constant battle between empathy and exasperation. Her relationship with Gary highlights the emotional toll that addiction takes on family members.
Andy
Harboring past resentments, Andy’s character illustrates how unresolved issues can fester and impact relationships. His interactions with Gary bring to light the theme of forgiveness and the importance of addressing underlying conflicts.
Barb
As someone who ridicules Gary’s addiction, Barb embodies societal judgement and the stigma surrounding behaviors that are deemed as “unconventional.” Her character challenges viewers to reflect on their own biases and the impact of societal attitudes towards the mental health of those around them.
Filming in Milwaukee
Our team is set to film in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin next month. Because much of our cast and crew reside in Milwaukee and already know the area well, we decided that it would provide the perfect backdrop for our story. The city’s blend of urban and natural settings will enhance the visual storytelling, adding depth and authenticity to Gary’s world.
A Broader Perspective on Addiction
While many films about addiction focus on the abuse of specific substances, “Wrong End of the Blade” emphasizes that addiction itself is the core issue, not the substance. By focusing on non-traditional addiction, we aim to explore the broader aspects of mental health that addiction affects. This approach allows us to address the universal nature of addiction and its impact on individuals as well as their relationships.
Avoiding Triggers and Reaching a Wider Audience
We have intentionally chosen not to depict substances in “Wrong End of the Blade” that are traditionally associated with addiction. This decision is rooted in our desire to avoid triggering our audience and to reach a wider range of viewers. By presenting an unconventional addiction, we aim to foster a broader conversation about mental health and addiction, amplifying the positive impact of our story.
A Personal Connection to this Story
Our team’s commitment to this project is deeply personal. Many of us have been directly affected by addiction, giving us a unique and authentic perspective. This personal connection ensures that our portrayal is both sensitive and genuine. We are not outsiders attempting to tell a story we don’t understand; we are individuals with a personal stake in sharing this narrative.
Securing Support and Funding
We are currently in the phase of pre-production when we are seeking support and funding for our film to adequately prepare for production. This support is crucial in helping us bring this story to life. We believe that “Wrong End of the Blade” has the potential to resonate deeply with audiences, fostering empathy and understanding for those grappling with addiction.
